Why I Love: Floral Post
I want to make a little more room around here for something special to me.
We live in a world overflowing with “big-box” everything, and while there is certainly convenience, sense, and even passion in that, I find myself increasingly drawn to the people behind the things I bring into my life—the businesses built thoughtfully by people who care deeply about what they're making and how they're putting it into the world.
So, I'm starting a little series about those people and brands. The ones I find myself returning to, recommending to friends, reading about, and generally doting on a little more than the average company. A place to tell you why I love something, rather than simply telling you that I do.
Meet Floral Post.
If you've never heard of them, Floral Post is a boutique floral shipping company based here in Virginia, sending beautifully grown and thoughtfully sourced flowers directly to your door. But calling them a flower delivery company feels like it misses the point. What Elizabeth and Tayler have created is really a celebration of the lifestyle of flowers—the idea that flowers aren't just for birthdays or special occasions. They belong on the kitchen island simply because they make an ordinary Tuesday feel a little more beautiful.
And that, naturally, is something I can get behind.
I first discovered Floral Post a little over a year ago when I spotted their gorgeous dahlias on Instagram. I immediately fell in love with the concept: a small, boutique flower company that wasn't trying to be another big-box floral shop. They communicated their purpose on a different level than bigger outfits - the-slow-down-and-enjoy-life-kind-of-way - which I appreciate the most.
Last year, their debut bouquet was made with dahlias grown on their own farm. When their home-grown florals aren't in season, they source from growers around the world—somehow finding flowers that feel entirely right for the season we're in here in the US.
They've also thought through all the little things.
I'll admit, I was skeptical about flowers arriving in a box. Could they really still feel special? That first green box on my doorstep answered that pretty quickly. Inside were the most beautiful roses, along with thoughtful instructions that taught me things I genuinely didn't know—like the fact that you can simply remove those browned outer petals to reveal the beautiful rose underneath.
And then there's the sourcing. Floral Post tells you not only where your flowers came from, but who grew them. You're often greeted with a lovely photo of the women who work on the flower farm where your flowers were grown. That's something we're rarely invited into when we're grabbing flowers at the grocery store. I love that little glimpse behind the bouquet.
A year after discovering them on Instagram, I found myself packing up a batch of madeleines and driving to their farm just outside Charlottesville.
It was peak dahlia season—a hot September day—and the whole thing felt a little like stepping into a storybook. Co-founders Elizabeth and Tayler walked me through the flower field with their two lovely dogs, snipping blooms and talking about flowers, business, friendship and life.
I learned more about these ladies behind the brand, too: how they met during their DC days while in business school, became friends, hosted parties, and eventually built Floral Post together. Their work in global development has also taken them around the world, where they find themselves thinking about the growers, places and flowers that might make their way into next year's offerings.
Hearing those stories while standing in their fields solidified my love for the brand—and, perhaps even more, for the people behind it.
As someone who shares the things I love for a living, I'm increasingly interested in more than whether something is simply worth having. I want to know the story behind it. Who made it? Why? What do they care about?
I don't want everything I have in my home to feel transactional - in fact, the opposite. I want it all to have meaning. I want there to be a little story behind it. A reason to care.
My visit to Floral Post gave me a much deeper appreciation for the people behind something I already loved.
So now, when that iconic green box arrives at my door, there’s more to love than the insanely gorgeous flower inside. I think about my time in those fields outside Charlottesville where it all began, the growers around the world, the seasons they're already planning for, and all the care that went into getting something beautiful from a field somewhere to my kitchen island.
That feels worth noticing.
And worth sharing with you!
